Many people have begun to turn to artificial intelligence to make their job easier, but you have to be careful to avoid falling victim to the many shortcomings of a form of technology that still leaves a lot to be desired—a lesson that NBA insider Chris Haynes learned the hard way thanks to a picture he posted while covering the first day of the NBA’s free agency negotiation period.
At this point, it’s pretty clear that artificial intelligence isn’t going anywhere despite the many critics and skeptics who’ve pushed back against the rise of the platforms that have successfully been positioned as The Next Big Thing with the help of the companies that have made a concerted push to get a return on the billions of dollars they’ve poured into them.
It is hard not to be impressed by the strides A.I. has made in the span of just a few years, but it’s also impossible to ignore the many flaws and kinks that still need to be worked out.
For example, there are a number of different platforms you can harness that allow you to punch in some text and create a fairly realistic image or video, but if you’ve spent a fair amount of time experimenting with them, you’re likely aware that the end product frequently contains some odd details that tend to infiltrate the so-called “A.I. slop” that’s begun to litter the internet.
One of the biggest issues is A.I.’s consistent inability to produce legible text and lettering, which tends to be an incoherent mess if you’re attempting to generate, say, an image featuring the logo on a sports jersey.
On Monday, NBA insider Chris Haynes tried to do exactly that when A.I. was presumably tapped to create a picture to accompany a tweet concerning the two-year, $13 million deal D’Angelo Russell will be getting from the Mavericks—which featured him in a jersey that read “Dalieas” as opposed to “Dallas.”
It didn’t take long for that oversight to be addressed, as the initial post was edited to swap out the jersey for one that actually said “Dallas” on the front.

That’s not a great look in multiple senses.
